Drawings for the dearest
Today, after rushing to pick up Mykolas from kindergarten, I find the group’s “dried” drawings.
Without really looking for his—because during lessons my little one usually takes an honorable “OBSERVER, not participant POSITION”—I open my eyes wide: every child has one drawing displayed, but MYKOLAS has TWO DRAWINGS.
While standing there, I hear the Teacher’s voice:
“Today in art class we talked about the people we love the most,” she explains,
and discussed with the children what could be the best gift for someone. We decided that a hand-drawn card for the one you love is the most beautiful gift you can give.
Mykolas listened attentively.
And when it came time to draw, he joined the lesson for the first time.
He grabbed a pencil and TWO PIECES OF PAPER.
“When I asked if he wanted to draw two cards,” continued the Teacher, “Mykolas very seriously replied:
‘YES, for my sister PA and my brother DO.’”
Author’s note: for sister Patricija and brother Dominykas.
Listening, I felt a dam of tears building in my eyes.
Maybe because of the sensitive weeks.
Maybe because of fragile nerves.
Maybe because of everything together.
But the fact that, for a child who has no one else, his sister and brother are the most precious things he has—it touched me deeply.
Heaven knows, this time neither I nor Daddy were among the chosen recipients.
For them.
So small. And so sweet.
“Uncrowned,”
