medal
I wasn’t one of those kids who had the walls of their childhood home covered in medals they had won.
Not because I kept them hidden away in a drawer.
But because I didn’t have any.
I couldn’t boast about any exceptional athletic abilities.
But yesterday!
Patricija came back from the countryside with a medal.
I was asked to bow my head ceremoniously and was “awarded” it.
Oh well, I say—it only took 38 years to wait for it.
And I didn’t get just some “bronze,”
But straight to “gold.”
And oh well, never mind that my “gold” was carved out of wood by Grandpa,
And “engraved” with an ordinary pencil.
I feel like a winner in the competition of life.
A winner,
V.
