A blanket with “little tassels”

This morning, just settling into the car heading to work, I dial Mom’s number:
– How’s the winner doing? – I ask.
– What? – she replies, confused.

Even though she’s the most devoted reader of my Facebook posts and usually reads them instantly, yesterday’s one about HER WORK… she hasn’t seen yet. She hasn’t had a free moment.

So many beautiful words from you all, so many lovely comments, even requests to pass them on to Mom, saying it’s the most beautiful thing your eyes have ever seen. And she hasn’t read it yet.

But I can already imagine her, having found out, slowly turning on the computer, nose peeking over her glasses, and reading it slowly, calmly, savoring every word. I’m sure she’ll read it more than once. She might even wipe away a tear. And imagining that makes it feel even sweeter to me.

– Mom, what kind of yarn did you use?
– Wool. Natural. Does it itch?
– No, it’s perfect. Do you know the brand?
– Noooo, I just bought leftovers.
– How much did you get?
– Over three rounds. I don’t remember, maybe six or seven kilos.
– And what needles did you use?
– Oh, thick ones. The thickest I had.
– Do you know the number?
– Not really. Maybe an eight…
– And the length of the needles?
– I used a long “line” between them. People said I looked like I was knitting a fishing net.
– How long did it take?
– Oh, I’m quick. I’m retired, after all.
– Do you remember the pattern?
– “Little pearls.”

I thank her for all the answers. And she adds:
– But if you, my dear, ever need anything else knitted, just tell me. I’ll try…

Just as I thought, love weighs more than the yarn needed for a blanket.
