“What was the best thing that happened during the holiday?”

Returning from a seaside holiday 🏖‍👩‍👩‍👦‍👦

After a good stretch of the journey, with two passengers having properly dozed off, the second half of the trip begins, when the “Are we there yet?” question buzzes around like an annoying fly. So we spark a conversation:

“WHAT WAS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED DURING HOLIDAY?”

Do starts:

I finally saw the Parnidis dune.
And I also bought an amber bracelet,- he waves his hand with the very expensive souvenir as he explains his thoughts.
And I finally learned to do a handstand “sun pose”,- interrupts his brother Pa, not waiting for his turn.
And I was brave. When Do threw a jellyfish on my head, I didn’t cry.
And the necklace—new ones—gripped between my fingers, the highest quality jewelry.
Dad twirls his mustache, clearly thinking about his own best moment.

I got sunburned on my stomach,- he laughs.
And you, Mom? What about you???
I stay quiet, thinking what my “wow” moment was.

You found the amber your sister later lost,- remembers Do.
And got sunburned just the way you like it,- adds Pa.
And you weren’t afraid of jellyfish.
As we chat, we drive into Vilnius. To make sure the journey through the city isn’t boring, another question floats in the air:

And what’s the best thing in Vilnius?
Gediminas Castle!!!!- shouts the backseat crew in unison.
And what else?
Silence. Thoughts clearly swirling in little heads.

Maybe your boutique,- Do raises his eyebrows after a pause.
And grandparents…- adds Pa, already out of the car and engrossed in Grandma’s garden produce.
Nidutė. Parnidis dune. Amber beads. Handstand “sun poses.” Jellyfish chases. Dunes. Waves like walls. Ferry. Pebbles. Piles of shells. Kites. Lifeguard flags. Diving.

Gediminas Castle. Mom’s boutique. Grandparents. Bunches of tomatoes. Handfuls of strawberries. Carrot bundles. Blackberry handfuls. Cucumbers with fresh honey. Home. Missed Bosas. Own bed. Pillow for the softest dreams. Missed toys.

Everywhere is good.
At home, with souvenirs and memories, is the best.

Mua,
V.
