We lived in an apartment.<\/p>\n
So I loved the \u201ccompensation\u201d kittens and little rodents Mom and Dad got us.<\/p>\n
But it wasn\u2019t the same as a big dog.<\/p>\n
Now we have a dog.<\/p>\n
A big dog.<\/p>\n
One whose neck you can hug like a person\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I realize that my insistence on getting him was really my childhood dream catching up with me.<\/p>\n
I grumble over the Sisyphean task of the vacuum trying to handle his shedding.<\/p>\n
I roll my eyes at the seemingly endless training, which eats up nearly all my free time and sometimes frays my last nerve.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I scold myself for having to handle vet visits, vaccinations, and the occasional \u201cmishaps\u201d on top of an already challenging trio of kids.<\/p>\n
But.<\/p>\n
Every time I look at the children\u2014<\/p>\n
Growing up alongside him\u2014<\/p>\n
I forget everything.<\/p>\n
And I remember something I once heard:
