Today, Patricija gets a \u201creferral\u201d from the doctor for a blood test.
\n\u201cWell, here we go,\u201d a wave of heat runs through my thoughts.
\nIn the waiting room, I glance at her hesitantly.
\nBut she sits as if she swallowed a stake.
\nNo sniffles.
\nNo discussions about why the world is so cruel and unfair.
\nShe just sits and waits patiently.<\/p>\n
They call her in.
\nShe steps resolutely into the procedure room.
\nSettles into the chair and extends her arm.<\/p>\n
The nurse finishes quickly,
\nand Patricija thanks her and walks out with a smile.<\/p>\n
On the way back, I praise her.
\nAnd I remind her of a time, not too long ago, when I literally had to pry this day\u2019s brave girl off the handle of the procedure room door, where she had clung with both hands, loudly declaring she would not go in under any circumstances.<\/p>\n
Patricija laughs like she\u2019s in a joke, then adds:
\n\u201cBack then, I was Dominykas\u2019 little sister.
\nAnd now\u2014Mykolas\u2019 older one.
\nBig sisters don\u2019t cry over little things.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she adds:
\n\u201cMom, did you see? I didn\u2019t even close my eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n
For sisters.
\nBig and small. Together.<\/p>\n
They grow up, carrying their own little quirks, which back then stretched what felt like the last nerve, as we listened to anecdotes worth a hearty laugh.<\/p>\n
