Today, Pa and I rolled up our sleeves and painted eggs. Together, we made a frog.
\n\u201cOh, this one will go to Daminyk,\u201d Pa nods, examining our joint creation.
\n\u201cHe\u2019s our frog rescuer,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not very fond of frogs. Tiny ones are half the problem. But the big \u201clumps,\u201d the ones that barely fit in your hand, I really don\u2019t like. Unpleasant, honestly. And though I haven\u2019t handled them in detail, just looking at them from a distance, I can imagine that touching them would be\u2026 unpleasant.<\/p>\n
And today, as if on cue, when spring is nudging us outside, the frogs also move toward that same side. They stir. They wiggle. A decent little \u201cpile\u201d of them. And, ignoring the road signs, they try to reach their goal in the clumsiest way, thinking they can \u201ctransport\u201d themselves across the road.<\/p>\n
What are they looking for there? Suitors? Ladies? Luck? That other side seems coated in honey, irresistibly enticing. They must leap, no matter what.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, could their sticky skin be like a reflection?\u201d Do shrugs as we walk our loop around the neighborhood yesterday. I shake my head firmly, using my modest biology knowledge and the memory that I\u2019ve never seen \u201cjumping beetles\u201d on the road while driving.<\/p>\n
\u201cPoor things,\u201d sighs nature-lover Do, eyeing a frog that didn\u2019t quite cross the road successfully.
\n\u201cMaybe we should dig a ditch along the road?\u201d he cheerfully suggests.
\n\u201cThen they\u2019d all jump into it and avoid the wheels.\u201d
\n\u201cA long ditch, though,\u201d I smile, scanning the road we\u2019re walking.
\n\u201cMaybe we could call the neighbors to help?\u201d he continues, undeterred.
\n\u201cAnd then we could take turns watching the ditch every day and lift the frogs out.\u201d
\nHe finishes his brilliant frog-rescue plan like a tiny \u201cTadas Ivanauskas Junior.\u201d<\/p>\n
In my mind, I already picture the neighborhood volunteer team digging \u201clong ditches\u201d and taking shifts on the frog-rescue line. We\u2019d become famous, I smile to myself.<\/p>\n
Night falls. Do marches along, flashlight in hand, and soon spots a moving little pile.
\n\u201cOh, a frog!\u201d he shouts. \u201cAlive! And so big!\u201d<\/p>\n
Soon, a car\u2019s headlights appear on the horizon. Probably calculating that the little frog would meet a sad fate, he tries to nudge it to safety with a stick. The frog doesn\u2019t listen. It resists, squeaking a sharp, angry sound.<\/p>\n
Then\u2026 he scoops the frog (or maybe a toad\u2014it was crawling, not hopping) into both hands, barely fitting, and places it safely across the road, by the feet of the pavement.
\n\u201cGo,\u201d he says, letting the frog\/toad slip from his hands. \u201cMaybe you\u2019re hurrying to the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
A tear of pride squeezes my throat. We return home happy. He\u2014having saved a few more frogs. And me\u2014with a heart as full and good as that little frog\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
For the children who understand and feel, sometimes even more than we adults do.<\/p>\n
