In my childhood, Mom grew roses in the garden.<\/p>\n
She would wait for them to bloom.
\nShe would admire their blossoming.
\nAnd when the birthday of someone important came, she would drive to the garden, take big scissors, and cut the roses she had grown herself\u2014twisting them into an imperfect bouquet.<\/p>\n
The stems were never perfectly straight.
\nThe blooms were definitely not champions of beauty.<\/p>\n
She would wrap the stems in damp paper and, carefully placing them on the back window of the old Zhiguli, drive them over.<\/p>\n
As a child, I would watch that clumsy process,
\nthat sudden \u201cundoing\u201d of a blooming garden, and think:
\nmaybe she\u2019s trying to save money?
\nWouldn\u2019t it be easier to just stop at a flower market and buy some?<\/p>\n
This morning, getting ready for Mom\u2019s birthday,
\nI took big scissors and went out to my own roses.<\/p>\n
With imperfect stems.
\nWith unpolished blooms.
\nI twisted them into an uneven bouquet.<\/p>\n
Of course, it\u2019s easier to stop at a market.
\nAnd more logical
\nthan carrying wrapped stems all the way from Vilnius to Panev\u0117\u017eys.<\/p>\n
But I will carry them.<\/p>\n
Now I understand\u2014
\nback then, Mom wasn\u2019t saving money.
\nShe was cutting love with big scissors
\nand giving it away.<\/p>\n
The weekend has arrived\u2014
\na perfect chance to hug the ones who taught you love.
\nOr at least give them a call.
